Metallo Borohydrides. I. Aluminum Borohydride

Abstract: As has already been described in a brief preliminary communication, trimethylaluminum and diborane react to form the compound AIB~Hu, according to the equation Ala(CHs)s + 4B2Hs + 2B(CH& f 2AlBaHin (6) Burg and Schlesinger, ibid., 59, 780 11937). (6) Burg and Schlesinger, ibid., 62, 3425 (1940).

“…From this point of view, it is important to carry out synthesis of new borohydrides by addition with other complex forming borohydrides, like Al(BH 4 ) 3 . 20 Herein we report on the synthesis, crystal structure, and Raman vibrational spectra together with thermal analysis of K[Al(BH 4 ) 4 ] which was first obtained by Semenenko et al 21 The synthesis was performed with liquid Al(BH 4 ) 3 and KBH 4 with the aim to prevent formation of possible halide-containing phases, common in case of metathesis reactions between borohydrides and halides. The crystal structure was determined by synchrotron powder diffraction, and further structural characterization was performed with Raman and IR spectroscopy.…”

“…As a consequence, several new tetrahydroborates were synthesized. Nowadays, the mono-cation tetrahydroborates of 32 chemical elements, plus an undefined number of multi-cation tetrahydroborates are known [23,38,[42][43][44][45][52][53][54][55][56][57][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78].…”

“…The most prominent RHC system based on tetrahydroborates is 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 [134,135,157] According to the reaction (52), it has the reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 11.5 wt % and a theoretical reaction enthalpy of 46 kJ/mol H 2 , which implies a hydrogen equilibrium pressure of 1 bar at 170 • C [158]. 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 2LiH + MgB 2 + 4H 2 (52) In the last decade this system has been thoroughly investigated with respect to reaction pathway, temperature and hydrogen pressure boundaries, microstructure, effect of additives on the reaction kinetics, and nanoconfinement [159][160][161][162][163][164][165][166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173].…”

“…A request from the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC) to investigate the synthesis of volatile compounds of uranium having low molecular weight, but without the corrosive properties of UF6, led Schlesinger's group to extend the method of preparation of other metal borohydrides, such as aluminum and beryllium borohydride (26)(27)(28) (which happened to be the most volatile compounds of these metals), to uranium borohydride (eq 3-6) (29 …”
