Metallic Transport in Chemical Vapor Deposition ZrTe3 Nanoribbons on a SiO2 Wafer Substrate

Abstract: We report on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of quasi-one-dimensional zirconium tritelluride (ZrTe 3 ) at temperatures below 600 °C and process times under an hour, which results in a material on a SiO 2 /Si wafer substrate that offers electrical conductivity comparable to the bulk. This study combines tailored CVD processing using a tube-in-a-tube technique with characterization by optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy validates t… Show more

“…The vertical rods shown in the middle figure indicate the direction of high conductivity; these colored rods extend along the b -axis and create the quasi-1D wires. They assemble in sheets, which in turn stack to make up the bulk . The ternary chalcogenides such as MAX 3 (e.g., CrSbSe 3 ), M 2 AX 5 (e.g., Nb 2 PdS 5 ), and M 2 A 3 X 8 (M = Ta, Nb, A = Ni, Pd, Pt, X = S, Se) also have a linear crystal structure. , For instance, CrSbSe 3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic phase, where the Sb atoms occupying the edge of the double-rutile chains bind to three Se atoms in the trigonal pyramidal geometry (Figure h).…”
