Introduction:The ecological equilibrium of the earth is endangered by the chemical process industries as most industries continue to spew chemical toxicants into the environment. Since local metallurgical activity is inevitable in Nigeria. Aim: This research is aimed at assessing the effect of heavy metals air pollution arising from local metallurgical activities on Albino rat. Methods: Particular matter samples were collected for 24h at four different sites twice a month using a high volume air sampler. Point A is Bakin Dogo Market, Point B is Old Panteka market, Point C is new Panteka market and Point D is U/Ma'azu. All the collected samples were analyzed for heavy metals using standard laboratory procedures. Six hundred newly born male albino rats were collected from National Institution for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) and were exposed to the sampling points twenty four hours daily via out the experimental period. Mortality, haematological and histological parameters were investigated. The rat tissues were also digested for the determination of Bioconcentration factor (BCF).Result: The result obtained shows high Concentration of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Ni) above the recommended limit by European commission (EC), World health organization (WHO) and NEPM (National Environmental Protection Measures). Higher BCF was obtained for all the heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Cu and Cd) which was attributed to the higher changes in Mortality, haematological and histological parameters if compare to the control. Conclusion:The studies shows how heavy metal air pollution could cause Mortality and also bring about changes in haematological and histological parameters, which resulted due to high BCF. It is thereby recommended that local metallurgical activities should be closely monitored by environmental agencies such as Kaduna state environmental protection agencies (KEPA) and Federal environmental protection agencies (FEPA). The government should also make regulations that will mandate the paying of environmental degradation tax owing to the daily multiplication of vehicles and other automobile materials. Ipatinga (IPA) and Coronel Fabriciano (FAB) cities are located in Vale do Aço, a metropolitan area and the largest industrial area in Minas Gerais state, where there are two steel mills and one pulp mill, as well as other micro and small factories. Due to industrialization, population growth, technological development and intense vehicle traffic in the region, the air pollution has been increasing. Air pollution can result in public health problems, thus it is necessary to quantify the particulate matter concentration and the toxic metals and trace elements associated in this region. This study evaluated the concentration of the total suspended particles (TSP), inhalable particles with aerodynamic size up to 10 μm (PM10) by HI-VOL manual samplers in IPA and FAB, from May to November 2010. Metals and trace elements were determined in the PM10 and TSP samples. Neutron Activation Analysis, k0-method,was applied and determined the elements As, Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, Hf, La, Sb, Sc, Sr, Th, K, Zn, Zr; Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Al, Ca, Cu, Cd, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Ti, Zn, and Flame Emission Photometry, Na. The air quality was assessed based on the concentrations of TSP and PM10 according to CONAMA Resolution 03/1990 and elements by the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). It was observed that in the FAB concentration of TSP and PM10 mainly performed with greater variation and reached the upper limit established by CONAMA figures most often compared to the point in IPA. Air quality is generally presented GOOD for TSP and MP10 in both sampling sites. The Sn, Ca, Fe, Pb, elements Na, K, Zn and Al in TSP and PM10 in both counties were the most abundant. Fe and Sn were above the limit set by the WHO standard, as well as Cr, Pb and As The highest concentrations of TSP, PM10 and elements were observed during the dry and cold months.The high concentration results of Fe and Sn suggested that the sources of emissions were hematite transport and steel mill. It was found a strong correlation between elements concentrations and the steel factory activities and the vehicle traffic in this region.

The purpose of this study is to characterize metallic elements associated with atmospheric particulate matter in the dry deposition plate, total suspended particulate, fine particles, and coarse particles at Taichung Harbor and Gong Ming Junior High School (airport) in central Taiwan at a sampling site from June 2013 to August 2013. The results indicated that: (1) the average concentrations of the metallic elements Cr and Cd were highest at the Gong Ming Junior High School (airport), and the average concentrations of the metallic elements Ni, Cu, and Pb were highest at the Taichung Harbor sampling site. (2) The high smelting industry density and export/import rate of heavily loaded cargos were the main reasons leading to these findings. (3) The average metallic element dry deposition and metallic element PM(2.5-10) all followed the order of Pb > Cr > Cu > Ni > Cd at the two sampling sites. However, the average metallic elements Cu and Pb were found to have the highest dry deposition velocities and concentrations in PM(2.5) for the two sampling sites in this study. (4) The correlation coefficients of ambient air particle dry deposition and concentration with wind speed at the airport were higher than those from the harbor sampling site. The wind and broad open spaces at Taichung Airport were the possible reasons for the increasing correlation coefficients for ambient air particle concentration and dry deposition with wind speed at the Taichung Airport sampling site.
