Metal pollution assessment in a Brazilian hydroelectric reservoir: Geophagus brasiliensis as a suitable bioindicator organism

Abstract: Vossoroca is a reservoir in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Although it is located near big cities and can be used as a human water supply, it has remained unstudied. Concentrations of toxic metals and arsenic in sediments, water, liver, gills, and muscle of Geophagus brasiliensis from the reservoir were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Histological analyses were performed on the gills and the livers using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, respectively. The results showed that Vos… Show more

“…In this sense, the high Ni concentration in the sampling point 2 could be associated to the discharge of urban wastes from the Itaguaçu city, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. The Ni pollution levels in this study worry as the intake of foods contaminated with this metal lead to harmful effects on the biota and human health [7,52].…”

“…Hence, potentially toxic metals existing in hydrographic basins are also deposited in these environmental sites [4][5][6]. The water contamination by toxic metals is a worldwide issue due to high amount of HEPP constructed in the last years, and, lack of environmental politics for the monitoring and management of HEPP direct influence areas [7].…”

“…While we observed a predominance of normal lamellae in the specimens of B. iheringii collected in the S1, the opposite was observed for A. brevipinnis, i.e., a predominance of normal lamellae in the S3. Considering that the gills represent the first organ in contact with external pollutants (Doria, Voigt, Campos, & Randi, 2017), and knowing that the S3 is located within a private property containing rice cultivation, we can consider that the results observed in A. brevipinnis do not seem to reflect the real impact of sampling sites.…”

“…Apesar de os valores do Ni terem variado entre 06,60 mg/kg e 20,69 mg/kg, os níveis de poluição verificados, quando excedem os limites das diretrizes de qualidade dos sedimentos, são preocupantes, pois, a ingestão de alimentos/nutrientes contaminados com este metal pode causar efeitos adversos à biota (CETESB, 2005;DORIA et al, 2017).…”
