Abstract:The long-lived migratory fish in the lower Athabasca region (including the Athabasca oil sands region) are valued ecosystem components and good bio-indicators of changes in habitat condition, water quality and quantity over the entire stream network. Changes in this region may have been caused by a variety of human activities including oil sands development, forestry, urban development, and recreational activities. We reviewed existing data to examine whether community composition and health of migratory fish (such as northern pike, walleye, and suckers) in the lower Athabasca region have changed over the past 40 years and whether these could be explained by changes in hydrology or water chemistry. Declines of 53%-100% in the abundance of three migratory fish species were detected in the Muskeg watershed (15% land change). Significant changes in fish health were detected. The largest decreases in body condition of fish in the region occurred in the late 1990s and coincided with elevated levels of fin erosion, the most frequently occurring external abnormality, and with extreme discharge conditions. Fish habitat can be affected by both increases and decreases in discharge, and the most pronounced changes were increases in some watersheds of up to 20% of average discharge post-development. In contrast, decreases in discharge post-development in the Muskeg and Steepbank rivers correlated with a decrease in precipitation. Our results show that climatic events and landscape features such as wetlands are important for understanding changes in the system. Further research is needed to examine potential ecological consequences of the observed changes in hydrology for fish and to explore what caused the changes in migratory fish communities and fish health. This will require a better understanding of the trophic structure of the system and a better monitoring program for migratory fish.Key words: biodiversity decline, land use changes, cumulative effects, long-term monitoring protocol, climate change, network scale, Alberta, Athabasca River. Stress biomarkers, which can outline impacts of contaminants in aquatic biota at the biochemical level, are increasingly used as early warning tools in environmental monitoring. Reliable biomarker based assessment schemes, however, request appropriate knowledge of baseline levels of selected endpoints, and the potential influence of a range of natural influencing factors (both abiotic and biotic) as well. In this study, we examined the interspecies variability of various biomarkers (metallothioneins (MT), ethoxyresorufin-Odeethylase activity (EROD), lipid peroxidation (LPO), DNA strand breaks (DNA_sb), vitellogenin-like proteins (Vtg)) in Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis inhabiting either pristine-or moderately impacted sites of Lake Balaton (Hungary). Levels of all biomarkers considered revealed low interspecies variability in the two dreissenid species at all sampling sites, with consistently higher (but statistically insignificant) values in Dreissena polymorpha. Levels of all biomarkers varied within the two investigated seasons, with significant influence of the reproduction cycle particularly on the levels of metallothioneins and vitellogenin-like proteins. Each biomarker considered was elevated by October, with significantly higher values in the mussels inhabiting harbours. Insignificant spatial and temporal variability in the general health indicators (condition index, total protein content) of dreissenids was observed, which, in parallel with evident rise in biomarker levels, apparently suggest that the anthropogenic impacts in harbours affect mussel fitness yet at sub organismal level. Our data might serve useful basis for future environmental monitoring surveys, especially in habitats where the progressive replacement of Dreissena polymorpha by Dreissena bugensis is taking place, as the interspecies variability in susceptibility to chemical stress of the two species is well comparable.

To evaluate potential interactive effects of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on biomarker responses, groups of the freshwater fi sh crucian carp (Carassius auratus) were exposed to single and binary combinations of copper (Cu) (0.01-0.16 mg L-1) with fl uorene (Fl) or fl uoranthene (Fluo) (2-10 mg kg -1 ) for 96 h. Dose-dependent increases in the activities of phases I and II metabolic enzymes [7-ethoxyresorufi n O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), respectively] were observed in fi sh liver exposed to Fl and Fluo, but these enzyme activities did not differ signifi cantly from the controls when co-treated with higher concentrations of Cu, suggesting an inhibiting interaction on the metabolic enzymes. Although Cu did not alter catalase (CAT) activity, CAT activity was decreased in fi sh liver exposed to the two PAHs alone or in combination with Cu. Although metallothionein (MT) content in gills was signifi cantly increased following exposure to Cu alone or in combination with Fl and Fluo, the induction folds of MT decreased under co-exposure. Co-exposures to these chemicals invoked complex biomarker responses in fi sh liver and gills. These results highlight the need for careful consideration of the interactive effects of multiple environmental stressors on fi sh.
