Metal Organic Framework-Polyethersulfone Composite Membrane for Iodine Capture

Abstract: A variety of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and evaluated for their iodine adsorption capacity. Out of the MOFs tested, ZIF-8 showed the most promising result with an iodine vapor uptake of 876.6 mg/g. ZIF-8 was then incorporated into a polymer, polyethersulfone (PES), at different proportions to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which were then used to perform further iodine adsorption experiments. With a mixing ratio of 40 wt % of ZIF-8, the iodine adsorption capacity reached 1387.6 mg… Show more

“…294 To date, the adsorption of I − or I 2 (g) on ZIFs has been investigated under different conditions. [295][296][297] Tong et al based on first-principles study investigated that C 6 H 6 exhibited strong inhibiting effects towards volatile iodine adsorption on ZIFs, whereas CO, NO and CH 4 had negligible inhibiting effects. 298 The secondary bonds of volatile iodine and ZIFs show remarkable charge transfer from ZIFs to I 2 .…”

“…Figure 7 compares the adsorption performance of several adsorbents obtained in recent years on iodine [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45], indicating that COP-HPP has the outstanding adsorption efficiency on iodine. Because its structure contains imine, benzene ring, N heterocyclic sites and other active sites, it can interact with iodine, so this kind of material has a good application prospect for iodine adsorption.…”

“…Recently, the concept of polymer–MOFs complexes has received wide attention. For instance, a hybrid of MOFs and polyethersulfone was prepared, 34 which provided an improvement in the adsorption capacity of analytes in comparison to the original MOF powder. Moreover, a post-immobilization hydrophobic modification strategy was proposed by coating MOFs with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).…”
