The pursuit of sustainable development refers to meet the present needs while safeguarding the resources for future generations ensuring the well-being of human societies. Nanoscience is contributing significantly to the field of public healthcare by delivering a number of cutting-edge technological applications and products related to healthcare. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), carbon-based nanomaterials, are gaining recognition for their potential health benefits worldwide. The current study aims to review the applications of CQDs in the biomedical field based on existing literature. The methodology used is the collection of the literature studies from authoritative sources such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and ResearchGate, with keywords ‘Carbon quantum dots in healthcare, biosensing, bioimaging, gene therapy, treatment, and theranostics’. The retrieved literature was comprehensively analyzed to construct the detailed review which suggests that CQDs have demonstrated remarkable potential across various domains, from disease treatment to biosensing, gene delivery, drug delivery, and bioimaging thus helping to achieve the 3rd goal of sustainable development. In addition to CQDs synthesized by chemical processes, natural CQDs developed by green chemistry from natural sources are gaining accreditation due to their evidenced potential health benefits. This article has reviewed the versatile applications of Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs) in the biomedical field and discussed the possible contributions to achieve sustainable healthcare for the first time, suggesting CQDs as a potential target for future research and development. However, there are some limitations of CQDs including complex surface modification, toxicity, limited clinical translation which requires more attention in order to improve their healthcare applicability.

The increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in recent years has spurred research to produce new antimicrobial compounds. However, there is currently a lack of a rapid, simple, and quantitative assay to determine the antimicrobial characteristics of new antimicrobial compounds. In this study, we demonstrated that a simple water displacement apparatus can be used to determine the effects of various metal ions on the cell viability of a model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) by monitoring the volume of CO 2 (V CO2 ) released. Analysis on the effect of different metal ions on S. cerevisiae demonstrated a linear relationship between V COd 2 and the reduction potentials and a linear−logarithmic relationship between V COd 2 and the metal/ligand binding constant indicating this measurement's accuracy and quantitative nature. Due to its speed, simplicity, and accuracy, this water displacement method has the potential to be used as a pre-screening method to facilitate the rapid quantification and development of more effective antimicrobial agents for various applications including antimicrobial food preservation and packaging.

The worldwide health burden of colorectal cancer is still substantial, and traditional chemotherapeutic drugs sometimes have poor selectivity, which can result in systemic toxicity and unfavorable side effects. For colon‐specific medication delivery, bioengineered carbohydrate polymers have shown promise as carriers. They may enhance treatment effectiveness while minimizing systemic exposure and associated side effects. The unique properties of these manufactured or naturally occurring biopolymers, such as hyaluronic acid, chitosan, alginate, and pectin, enable targeted medicine release. These qualities can be changed to meet the physiological needs of the colon. In the context of colorectal cancer therapy, this article provides a comprehensive overview of current developments and prospective future directions in the field of bioengineered carbohydrate polymer synthesis for colon‐specific drug delivery. We discuss numerous techniques for achieving colon‐targeted drug release, including enzyme‐sensitive polymers, pH‐responsive devices, and microbiota‐activated processes. To increase tumor selectivity and cellular uptake, we also examine the inclusion of active targeting approaches, such as conjugating specific ligands. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of combination treatment strategies, which use the coadministration of numerous therapeutic medications to target multiple pathways implicated in cancer growth and address drug resistance mechanisms. We address recent biomimetic advances that potentially improve the biocompatibility, cellular uptake, and tumor penetration of carbohydrate polymer‐based nanocarriers. These methods involve protein corona engineering and cell membrane coating. Furthermore, we look at the possibility of intelligent and sensitive systems that may adjust their behaviors in response to certain inputs or feedback loops, allowing for precise and regulated drug distribution.
