Metal−Ligand Bonding and Bonding Energetics in Zerovalent Lanthanide, Group 3, Group 4, and Group 6 Bis(arene) Sandwich Complexes. A Combined Solution Thermochemical and ab Initio Quantum Chemical Investigation

Abstract: In this paper we report a comparative experimental thermochemical and ab initio quantum chemical study of metal−ligand bonding and bonding energetics in the group 3, lanthanide, group 4, and group 5 zerovalent bis(arene) sandwich complexes Sc(TTB)2 (1) Y(TTB)2 (2), Gd(TTB)2 (3), Dy(TTB)2 (4), Ho(TTB)2 (5), Er(TTB)2 (6), Lu(TTB)2 (7), Ti(TTB)2 (8), Zr(TTB)2 (9), Hf(TTB)2 (10), Ti(toluene)2 (11), and Nb(mesitylene)2 (12) (TTB = η6-(1,3,5-tBu)3C6H3). “…A subsequent density functional study confirmed the FM coupling in multidecker sandwich V n (Bz) n+1 clusters [8]. Motivated by the above experimental and theoretical studies, we propose that the 1D organometallic sandwich polymers [V(Bz)] ∞ are the possible candidates for spintronic devices for spinpolarized transport since the polymers with an inherently uniform size are supposed to be also FM.Metal-ligand molecules have been the subject of many studies in the past decade [9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16]. Especially, TM-Bz complexes (M n (Bz) m ) are the prototypical organometallic complexes for studying the d−π bonding interactions.…”

“…In order to gain more insight into these different processes, variable-temperature 1 H NMR experiments were performed. “…Cr(Bz) 2 and Mn(Bz) 2 with a sandwich structure are also observed experimentally [61]. Although the multidecker sandwich M n (Bz) m clusters have been extensively studied theoretically [62][63][64][65], studies of the 1D [TM(Bz)] ∞ polymers are still very lacking. To our knowledge, only one semiempirical Hückle calculation was performed to examine the thermodynamical stability of the 1D [TM(Bz)] ∞ polymers [58].…”
