Metal—Ligand Bond Dissociation Energies in CpMn(CO)<sub>2</sub>L and Cr(CO)<sub>5</sub>(olefin) Complexes

Diverse aspects of the energetics of organomanganese compounds are considered in this chapter. Bond energies, enthalpies of formation and enthalpies of reaction are discussed. Classical combustion calorimetry plays only a small role compared to reaction calorimetry and techniques from contemporary ion energetics. While carbonyl, cyano, cyclopentadienyl, and benzene derivatives dominate the discussion, species with numerous other σ and/or π‐bonded ligands also appear. Quantitation is given whenever possible.

A selective and operationally simple iron‐catalyzed cross‐coupling of aryl chlorides with alkylmagnesium halides has been developed. The reaction tolerates various functional groups and exhibits high chemoselectivity even in the presence of aryl bromides. Mechanistic studies indicate the essential role of the olefin substituent for substrate activation. Competing polymerization and reduction are effectively suppressed.magnified image
