Metal levels in organically and conventionally produced animal and vegetable products in Turkey

Abstract: Lead, cadmium, copper, zinc and iron levels were determined in organically and conventionally produced wheat, green lentils, flower honey and eggs that are supplied on different markets in Ankara, Turkey. Their toxicological and nutritional values were compared with national and international limits and literature data. The levels of cadmium and lead in conventionally and organically produced wheat, green lentils, honey and egg were below the limit of detection (LOD), whereas the level of copper was only below… Show more

“…Based on the total amount of eggs consumed daily by Iranian adults (25.4 g/day; NNFTRI, 2022 ), the THQ of Pb for adults was calculated to be 0.0006, which was lower than China (0.009; Zheng et al, 2007 ), Egypt (0.005; Hashish et al, 2012 ), Turkey (0.005; Arslanbaş & Baydan, 2013 ), and Bangladesh (0.008; Shaheen et al, 2016 ); on the contrary, Hungary (0.107; Atamaleki et al, 2020 ) and Poland (1.280; Atamaleki et al, 2020 ) were the highest in THQ values. In contrast to Turkey, the THQ value for adults in the current study for Cd was 0.001.…”

“…In Turkey, 0.020, 0.055 and 0.020 mg/L of Cd, Pb and Cu, respectively, were found below the LOD in all of the organically and conventionally produced flower honey and eggs by analysis, whereas Fe concentrations were found at higher levels in organic compared to conventional products [40].…”

“…There are some studies on the determination of pollutants such as heavy metal, pesticide and mycotoxin in organic products (Malmuret et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2003). Yet, there is only one research conducted to determine heavy metal levels in some organic products (wheat, lentils, flowers honey, and eggs) in Turkey (Arslanbaş and Baydan, 2013). Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine some heavy metal (Al, As, Cd, and Pb) levels in conventional and organic dairy products offered for sale in Turkey and compare the results with national and international studies.…”
