Coastal ecosystems are subjected to multiple stresses, from physical disturbance to chemical contamination related to the local anthropogenic activities. The recent European directives and Italian laws recommend that the assessment of the ecological quality of costal seawater should be based on an integrated approach, taking into account the ecological complexity of the systems and highlighting the potential sources of impact. Here, we present the results of an environmental study carried out in the marine coastal area affected by the sea discharge of a Combined Cycle Power Plant (Torre Cavallo, Brindisi) and characterized by the presence of a Posidonia oceanica meadow. The study focused on the concentration of chemical contaminants in sediments, coupled with the study of quali-quantitative determinations of biological benthic communities meio-and macrozoobenthos). Data were integrated with data of phenology and lepidochronology of P. oceanica, as well as the concentrations of trace elements in leaves and rhizomes, in order to identify potential sources of stress. Results suggested a good status of health of the coastal marine ecosystem.

Summary:Concentrations of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn) in the marine bivalve Pinna nobilis at several coastal locations of Majorca and the Cabrera Islands (Mediterranean Sea) were investigated. The elevated concentrations of metals found in the soft tissues of P. nobilis indicate high bioaccumulation factors. All concentrations and the calculated metal pollution index showed significant differences between sites, with particularly high concentrations in the Cabrera Archipelago, a marine protected area (MPA). The datasets were evaluated with the limited information published in the literature for Pinnidae species worldwide. In benthic P. nobilis, concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn are more than 30 times higher and Hg and Pb concentrations are 4 and 7 times higher, respectively, than concentrations in other bivalve species, such as Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mytilidae). These observations from species inhabiting nearby ecological habitats of the coastal environment (Pinnidae vs. Mytilidae) are also discussed in the context of current marine monitoring strategies and assessments.Keywords: trace metal; bivalve; mollusc; bioaccumulation; Pinnidae, Mytilidae. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de la escasa información publicada sobre las especies de la familia Pinnidae a nivel mundial. Les fibres du végétal marin Posidonia oceanica (L.) ont été utilisées en tant que nouvel adsorbant biologique pour l’élimination du chrome hexavalent des solutions aqueuses artificiellement contaminées. Les expériences ont été effectuées en lots aussi bien pour les cinétiques que pour les isothermes d’adsorption. Les variables expérimentales étudiées sont le pH, la température, la quantité de biomasse et la concentration initiale de Cr(VI). Le maximum de biosorption a été observé pour un pH 2. La capacité de biosorption semble être optimisée par une augmentation de la température, de la quantité de biosorbant et de la concentration initiale. Les isothermes d’adsorption sont en accord avec les modèles de Redlich-Peterson et Langmuir. De plus, l’analyse thermodynamique a révélé que le présent processus d’adsorption est un phénomène favorable, endothermique et spontané.The marine biomass Posidonia oceanica (L.) fibres were used as a novel low cost biological adsorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium from artificially contaminated aqueous solutions. Experiments were carried out for sorption kinetics and isotherms in a batch system. The operating variables studied were pH, temperature, biomass quantity and initial chrome concentration. The maximum adsorption removal was observed at pH 2. The biosorption capacity of P. oceanica fibres for Cr(VI) was enhanced by increasing the temperature, the biosorbent amount and initial chromium concentration. The isotherm adsorption data were satisfactorily found to be described by both Redlich-Peterson and Langmuir. Besides, the thermodynamic studies revealed that the present adsorption process is a favourable, endothermic and spontaneous phenomenon
