Metal and Silicate Particles Including Nanoparticles Are Present in Electronic Cigarette Cartomizer Fluid and Aerosol

Abstract: BackgroundElectronic cigarettes (EC) deliver aerosol by heating fluid containing nicotine. Cartomizer EC combine the fluid chamber and heating element in a single unit. Because EC do not burn tobacco, they may be safer than conventional cigarettes. Their use is rapidly increasing worldwide with little prior testing of their aerosol.ObjectivesWe tested the hypothesis that EC aerosol contains metals derived from various components in EC.MethodsCartomizer contents and aerosols were analyzed using light and electr… Show more

“…To this end, e‐cigarettes are now known to be a source of a large number of toxicants, such as nicotine, cotinine, aldehydes (eg, acrolein), and particulate matter 101, 102, 103, 104. It is noteworthy that exposure to some of these toxicants, albeit from traditional tobacco smoking and other sources, was found to be associated with an enhanced platelet activation phenotype 6.…”

“…Further, the perception that, healthwise, e-cigarettes are largely harmless to users or bystanders needs to be incorporated into future e-cigarette measures. An erroneous belief that vapers are inhaling/exhaling "water vapors" which are completely inert rather than an aerosol of particles and a vapor of gas containing a complex mixture of chemicals, 19,20 presents numerous public health implications, not the least being that of properly communicating e-cigarette constituents to users and nonusers.…”

“…[32][33][34] Metal and silicate particles, some of which occur at higher levels than in conventional cigarettes, have also been detected in ENDS aerosol. 35,36 Thirdhand aerosol, as with thirdhand smoke, is the residual aerosol that remains on surfaces and in dust after ENDS use; this residual may react with oxidants in the environment to yield secondary pollutants or be reemitted into the gas phase. 37 Because nicotine on surfaces has been shown to be increased after ENDS use, 38 thirdhand aerosol is another potentially harmful unintentional source of nicotine exposure for youth.…”
