Cells are Gram‐stain‐positive rods (0.3–0.7 × 0.8–1.8 μm), non‐spore‐forming, motile, or nonmotile. Mesophilic and strictly aerobic chemo‐organotroph. Strains have been isolated from different types of soils, wood chips, and sewage sludge compost samples. In addition, one strain was obtained from a small intestine of castrated beef cattle. Produce acid phosphatase, leucine arylamidase, α‐glucosidase, and β‐glucosidase enzymes but not α‐chymotrypsin. The peptidoglycan contains 2,4‐diaminobutyric acid as diagnostic diamino acid and several strains also include ornithine. The major quinones are the menaquinones MK‐11 and MK‐12; in addition, MK‐10 can be present. The characteristic polar lipid is phosphatidylglycerol, while diphosphatidylglycerol and several unidentified phospholipids, glycolipids, aminolipids, and lipids could be present. Phylogenetically, a member of the family
