Metagenomic Next-generation Sequencing Indicates More Precise Pathogens in patients with pulmonary infection: a retrospective study

Abstract: Background: Timely identification of causative pathogens is always an important link for the diagnosis and treat for pulmonary infection. As a novel approach to detect the pathogens, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can directly sequence the nucleic acid of specimens, providing a wide range of microbial profiles. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of mNGS of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in patients suspected with pulmonary infection. Methods: From April 2019 … Show more

“…Retrospective design was used in all included studies. Five studies [11,12,14,15,16] only detected BALF samples, 4 merely included immunocompromised patients [14,15,18,19], and 3 only enrolled non-HIV cases [13,15,17]. In our meta-analysis, the included studies all had QUADAS scores >10, suggesting that all trials were of high quality.…”

“…Twenty five articles were selected for full-text review. Ultimately, our meta-analysis enrolled 9 studies [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] with a total of 1343 patients, including 418 cases diagnosed with PJP and 925 controls (Figure 1). All participants were adults.…”
