Metafrontier Analysis of Access to Credit and Technical Efficiency among Smallholder Cocoa Farmers in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract: It has been identified that limited access to timely credit has been a major constraint militating against increased agricultural productivity by farmers. Studies have shown that a large percentage of farmers faced with credit constraints have low production efficiencies. This study empirically investigated access to credit and technical efficiency (TE) of cocoa farmers in southwest Nigeria. The Study was conducted in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria. Primary data used for the study were collected in 2012 through… Show more

“…39 The estimated technical efficiency score is a censored variable with a lower limit of zero (0) and an upper limit of one (1), therefore the Tobit regression model is well suited to estimate the factors affecting farmers' sources of efficiency. The Tobit regression model has also been used in a number of studies 25,[40][41][42][43][44] to determine the factors affecting variation in technical efficiency of farmers.…”

“…Therefore the accurate and efficient post-harvest process, knowledge and welfare of farmers, and proper management should be sustainably improved (Effendy, 2015). In this case, farmers need a lot of technical guidance about, managing cocoa properly and the post-harvest process correctly (Aneani & Ofori-Frimpong, 2013;Awotide, et al, 2015). If the quality of cocoa beans from farmers is more guaranteed, expected to increase the marketing and promotion to the supplier of raw materials.…”

“…In fact, the advantage of metafrontier is theoretically attractive because it is based on the simple hypothesis that all producers in different regions have potential access to the same technology (Battese et al, 2004;O'donnell et al, 2008). This approach is widely used in agriculture (Okuruwa & Ogundele, 2004;Neymeck & Nkamleu, 2006;Villano et al, 2010;Awotide et al, 2015). In case of wheat, only few studies were done (Earfan Ali & Sama, 2013;Sabouhi & Esfanjari, 2014).…”
