Metacognition, psychopathology and daily functioning in adult ADHD

Abstract: Objective: Previous research indicated that adults with ADHD may have deficits in metacognition, yet the evidence base is scarce. This study aims to explore the existence and nature of metacognitive deficits in adults with ADHD, how psychopathology (such as inattention and depression) may affect metacognition and whether metacognition may impact daily functioning in adults with ADHD. Method: Forty-six adult patients with ADHD and 46 controls completed questionnaires for metacognition, psychopathology and daily… Show more

“…Numerous studies have found that many individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), even those without a comorbid disorder, display heightened levels of internalizing and externalizing symptoms compared with typically developing (TD) individuals (e.g., Butzbach et al, 2021 ; Skogli et al, 2013 ). These psychopathology symptoms can be troublesome and impact functional domains such as academic performances, quality of life, and occupational and family functioning (Schei et al, 2016 ; Sobanski et al, 2007 ; Zendarski et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Once this model has been fully validated, it can be used to identify the mechanisms underlying prospective memory deficits in clinical populations. For example, people with ADHD show deficits in prospective memory(e.g., Altgassen et al, 2014), effort regulation (Wiersema et al, 2006), and metacognition (e.g., Butzbach et al, 2021) due to the role of attention in all three.…”

“…Metacognition could be also defined as "thinking about thinking" or "knowing about knowing", referring to the understanding and regulation of our cognition [40]. It is deeply explored because it may affect a wide range of functional outcomes, including school and work performance as well as social functioning in various psychiatric disorders but also in healthy populations [41].…”
