Metachronous Malignant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Kidney: Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumors are well described in the pleura, but rare extra-pleural neoplasms have been reported. We describe a patient with a solitary left renal fibrous tumor who after undergoing a nephrectomy, presented 8 years later with a contralateral metachronous solitary fibrous tumor. Malignant metastatic extra-pleural solitary fibrous tumors are extremely rare, and to our knowledge, this is the first case of contralateral recurrence of solitary renal fibrous tumor. The patient underwent a robotic assist… Show more

“…SFTs/ HPCs were first described in the pleura and have since been reported in soft tissues and many other organs. [1][2][3][4][5][6] SFTs/HPCs in the central nervous system are rare and intraventricular SFTs/HPCs are even rarer. Most SFTs/ HPCs have benign clinical presentations, although some SFTs/HPCs are malignant.…”

“…Only one case of pulmonary metastases has been reported till now [9] . There are no reports of local recurrence after nephrectomy [10][11] but single case of metachronous solitary fibrous tumor of contralateral kidney was reported hence it is necessary that the patient be kept under imaging surveillance postoperatively [12] . On imaging CT may be non specific and may show areas of calcification, necrosis and enhancement.…”

“…Local recurrence of renal SFTs after nephrectomy has never been documented [ 14 - 15 ], and there was no evidence of tumor recurrence in our case two years after surgery. However, one case described a metachronous SFT on the contralateral side eight years after left nephrectomy, suggesting that postoperative imaging surveillance should play a role in renal SFT management [ 16 ].…”
