Metabolomics Reveals Discrimination of Chinese Propolis from Different Climatic Regions

Abstract: The chemical profiles of propolis vary greatly due to the botanic sources and geographic origins, which limit its standardization for modern usages. Here, we proposed a reliable 1H NMR-based metabolomic approach, to discriminate the function and quality of Chinese propolis. A total 63 Chinese propolis samples from different temperate regions were collected and extracted for NMR analysis. Twenty-one compositions in ethanol extracts were assigned based on characteristic chemical shifts and previous literature re… Show more

“…Proton ( 1 H) NMR has been extensively applied to prepare chemical profiles of various propolis extracts, prepared from the Brazilian, Chinese, Greek and Indian-propolis. In combination with chemometric analysis, these datasets were used to classify propolis samples based on their chemical proximity (Maraschin et al 2016 ; Kasote et al 2017 ; Wang et al 2020 ; Stavropoulou et al 2021 ). A particular advantage of NMR in the chemical characterisation of propolis is that it helps to identify isomeric compounds (Pavlovic et al 2020 ).…”

“…By introducing an orthogonal signal correction (OSC) filter, variation from X (descriptor variables) was removed to reduce model complexity by orthogonal projection to latent structure-discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA), which is uncorrelated with Y (property variables) to achieve good discrimination for samples [ 34 , 35 ]. In addition, it has always been successfully applied to study metabolomics and CMMs [ 36 39 ].…”

“…However, there is increasing interest in the use of NMR, the application of which has experienced exponential growth in several research fields, particularly food science, for geographical origin characterization, aging analysis, and fraud detection ( Consonni & Cagliani, 2019 ). For example, NMR has been used to profile other beehive products such as honey and propolis ( Maraschin et al, 2016 , Schievano et al, 2016 , Wang et al, 2020 ). To the best of our knowledge, although solid-state NMR analysis of bee pollen has been reported ( Paradowska et al, 2017 ), there have been no studies on the component profiling of liquid bee pollen extracts by NMR.…”
