Metabolomics integrated with machine learning to discriminate the geographic origin of Rougui Wuyi rock tea

Abstract: The geographic origin of agri-food products contributes greatly to their quality and market value. Here, we developed a robust method combining metabolomics and machine learning (ML) to authenticate the geographic origin of Wuyi rock tea, a premium oolong tea. The volatiles of 333 tea samples (174 from the core region and 159 from the non-core region) were profiled using gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry and a series of ML algorithms were tested. Wuyi rock tea from the two regions featured di… Show more

“…Metabolomics technology was also used to discriminate the geographic origin of Wuyi rock tea. The addition of ML was able to discriminate the volatiles of 333 samples (Peng et al, 2023). Similar techniques were applied for the geographical discrimination of a different type of tea, Flos Trollii, which is widely consumed in China.…”

“…Attempts to determine the geographical provenance of a food product have also become more prevalent with the introduction of protected geographical indication (PGI), protected designation of origin (PDO), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG) statuses by legislative bodies. Metabolomics presents a useful way of investigating the variability of metabolites found within different geographical populations of an edible insect species as it is relatively cheap compared to genomic and proteomic analysis and has been used to successfully discriminate the geographical origin of tea, rice, hazelnuts, honey, mussels and snapper fish (Azevedo et al, 2017(Azevedo et al, , 2017Ch et al, 2021;Drivelos et al, 2021;Goode et al, 2020;Klockmann et al, 2016;Peng et al, 2023;Rochfort et al, 2013).…”
