Metabolomics for improving pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies

Abstract: According to current trials in women undergoing ART, there is no evidence to show that metabolomic assessment of embryos before implantation has any meaningful effect on rates of live birth, ongoing pregnancy, miscarriage, multiple pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy or foetal abnormalities. The existing evidence varied from very low to low-quality. Data on other adverse events were sparse, so we could not reach conclusions on these. At the moment, there is no evidence to support or refute the use of this technique f… Show more

“…Several reports have demonstrated that analyzing all small molecules used and metabolized by the embryo [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] can help in the most appropriate embryo selection. On the other hand, robust answers from high-quality research cannot be pooled to date [ 18 ].…”

“…Disagreements were discussed and consensus was reached. Studies on metabolomics in reproductive medicine were reviewed relatively recently [ 62 , 63 ], and thus in the present analysis all reports on metabolomics in follicular fluid were excluded. Metabolomic studies performed in cell lines were out of the scope of this review, and so were also excluded.…”
