Metabolomics: A Primer

Abstract: Metabolomics generates a profile of small molecules that are derived from cellular metabolism and can directly reflect the outcome of complex networks of biochemical reactions, thus providing insights into multiple aspects of cellular physiology. Technological advances have enabled rapid and increasingly expansive data acquisition with samples as small as single cells; however substantial difficulties remain. In this primer, we provide an overview of metabolomics, especially mass spectrometry based metabolomic… Show more

“…The metabolome is affected by both internal and external factors/stimuli and, therefore, directly reflects the underlying biochemical activity and status of the biological system in question. Metabolic profiles may provide a wealth of information which can be used for disease prediction, disease progression, and treatment outcome .…”

“…Metabolomics is a field of study aiming to comprehensively analyze metabolites through the use of various analytical detection methods, namely mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) (Liu and Locasale, 2017). Although both NMR and MS are essential tools in metabolomics, mass spectrometry can analyze samples with greater sensitivity (Liu and Locasale, 2017).…”

“…Although both NMR and MS are essential tools in metabolomics, mass spectrometry can analyze samples with greater sensitivity (Liu and Locasale, 2017). Within mass spectrometry, various approaches are available, however a rapid approach to profile the global metabolome is needed (Lv et al ., 2011; Rhoades and Weljie, 2016).…”

“…Metabolomics is a relatively new member of the –omics family and an increasingly powerful tool for understanding cellular and systemic metabolism. It is generally defined as the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small‐molecule metabolites (<1,000 Da) involved in various biochemical reactions in biological systems . It aims to characterize the ultimate status of physiology or pathophysiology by measuring the time‐dependent metabolite alterations in a global metabolic network .…”
