Metabolomic signatures in elite cyclists: differential characterization of a seeming normal endocrine status regarding three serum hormones

Abstract: AP, MG, JCT and YLB supervised this work. JCT, YLB, MR, MG and AP contributed to design the experiment. AM and MG contributed to sample handling and collection and sample biobanking. MG achieved endocrine phenotyping and curation. CC and JM performed metabolomic analyses. FXL, BL and AP performed statistical analyses. CC did an expert-based assignment of putative biomarkers. AP performed the data interpretation and wrote the manuscript. JCT, YLB, MG, MR, CC, FXL and BL revised the manuscript. All authors have … Show more

“…The versatility of the blood metabolome has provided fruitful ground for an impressive body of work investigating rapid [18,19] and slow [20,21] changes in the body. Modern metabolomic approaches allow the identification of characteristic patterns of low molecular weight compounds and associate them with the development of pathologies [22][23][24], lifestyle [25,26], and eating habits [27][28][29] in both personalized mode [10,30,31] and large cohorts [32,33].…”

“…The samples were collected as part of anti-doping controls in or out of competition with a lack of information about the athletes’ age, ethnicity, body mass, or their current training status, all factors with probably considerable effects on the individual metabolome. During the past years, research focused on changes of the basal metabolome of endurance-trained athletes and athletes of different sports in response to a single sport-specific session or multiple training weeks [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. However, none of these studies investigated the effects of perennial training on the resting metabolome.…”
