▪ Abstract The motivation, present status, and future plans of the search for ββ(0ν) decay are reviewed. Recent observations of neutrino oscillations encourage the hope that ββ(0ν) decay corresponding to the neutrino mass scale suggested by oscillations, mν ≈ 50 meV, actually exists. The challenges to achieve the sensitivity corresponding to this mass scale, and plans to overcome them, are described.

The recent progress in establishing the existence of finite neutrino masses and mixing between generations of neutrinos has been remarkable, if not astounding. The combined results from studies of atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, and reactor antineutrinos paint an intriguing picture for theorists and provide clear motivation for future experimental studies. In this review, we summarize the status of experimental and theoretical work in this field and explore the future opportunities that emerge in light of recent discoveries.

Neutrino masses and mixing in supersymmetric models without R parity

We study neutrino masses and mixing in Supersymmetric Models without R parity and with generic soft Supersymmetry breaking terms. Neutrinos acquire mass from various sources: tree level neutrino-neutralino mixing, loop effects and non-renormalizable operators. Abelian horizontal symmetries (invoked to explain the smallness and hierarchy in quark parameters) replace R parity in suppressing neutrino masses. We find lower bounds on the mixing angles: sin θ ij > ∼ m(ℓ − i )/m(ℓ − j ) (i < j) and unusual order of magnitude predictions for neutrino mass ratios: m(ν e )/m(ν µ ) ∼ sin 2 θ 12 ; m(ν i )/m(ν τ ) ∼ 10 −7 sin 2 θ i3 (i = 1, 2). Bounds from laboratory experiments exclude m ν τ > ∼ 3 M eV and cosmological constraints exclude m ν τ > ∼ 100 eV . Neither the solar nor the atmospheric neutrino problems are likely to be solved by ν µ − ν e oscillations. These conclusions can be evaded if holomorphy plays an important role in the lepton Yukawa couplings. 5/96
