Metabolome of canine and human saliva: a non-targeted metabolomics study

Abstract: Introduction Saliva metabolites are suggested to reflect the health status of an individual in humans. The same could be true with the dog (Canis lupus familiaris), an important animal model of human disease, but its saliva metabolome is unknown. As a non-invasive sample, canine saliva could offer a new alternative material for research to reveal molecular mechanisms of different (patho)physiological stages, and for veterinary medicine to monitor dogs’ health trajectories. Objectives To investigate and chara… Show more

“…In the current study the presence of L-palmitoylcarnitine was detected in the A. nodosum-treated group. Turunen et al (19) detected sphinganine in dog saliva but not human saliva, and in the present study, sphinganine-1phosphate was detected in the A. nodosum-treated group. These are two examples of possible concordance between the results of the two studies, but what must be noted-and was also pointed out by (19)-is that thousands of molecules detected results in hundreds of identifications.…”

“…Protocol for collection, storage, and transportation was designed based on a protocol used for nuclear magnetic resonance-based oral biofluid samples (18). The method used in the current study differed from that recently described by (19), but it facilitated the acquisition of informative samples. Comparative studies are necessary however, to identify the best method of saliva sampling from dogs for metabolomic analyses.…”

“…The metabolomics analysis pipeline and the saliva sample metabolomics analysis have been previously described in detail [ 32 , 33 ]. Briefly, the saliva samples were thawed on ice.…”

“…hydrophobic fatty acids to polar amino acids, often addressed by using several analytical methods/platforms e.g. employing gas chromatography in addition to hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and reversed phase LC, to cover a broad part of the metabolome [19][20][21][22][23]. Although comprehensive analysis is provided, multi-separation approaches can be time consuming and laborious, sometimes requiring extensive sample preparation procedures.…”
