Metabolites from Marine Microorganisms, Micro, and Macroalgae: Immense Scope for Pharmacology

Abstract: Marine organisms produce a large array of natural products with relevance in drug discovery. These compounds have biological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumor, antivirus, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and so forth. Consequently, several of the metabolites have made it to the advanced stages of clinical trials, and a few of them are commercially available. In this review, novel information on natural products isolated from marine microorganisms, microal… Show more

“…Marine microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria are also sources of primary and secondary metabolites with anti-inflammatory activity. The major classes of molecules found in these organisms are peptides and proteins, lipids, polyketides, organic acids, and terpenoids [53][54][55]. Fungi, for example, are the source of a large number of marine alkaloids with known biological activity [50,56].…”

“…Natural products from marine and freshwater microalgae have been widely studied in the last years highlighting their diversified activities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, cardioprotective, and antidiabetic [126,127]. In addition, various studies have used an OSMAC approach in order to increase the production of specific metabolites [5,42,43].…”
