Metabolism and Excretion of Exogenous Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone in Humans

Abstract: A B S T R A C T To study the metabolism of thyrotropinreleasing hormone (TRH) in vivo, 400 Ag TRH was administered intravenously to eight normal male subjects. Multiple plasma and urine samples were obtained before and after TRH administration. Serum TSH concentrations increased after TRH administration in all subjects. Plasma TRH levels, measured by radioimmunoassay, were undetectable (< 0.4 ng/ml) before TRH administration. Plasma TRH concentrations averaged 33±7 ng/ml (mean +SEM) 2 min after TRH injection. … Show more

“…Thus, we evaluated TSH secretion in 52 patients after the exclusion of the above three patients. We evaluated the ΔTSH (peak TSH minus basal TSH) [17,21]. Basal PRL was also elevated in 14 of the patients performed TRH test, suggesting abnormal regulation through inhibition of the …”

“…According to Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd., thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), 2 also known as protirelin, is a tripeptide that consists of 5-oxoproline, histidine, and proline, and it is used for medical treatment of spinocerebellar ataxia. Administration of TRH to normal subjects results in a prompt increase of serum thyrotropin concentration.…”

“…Thyrotropin-releasing hormone is rapidly metabolized through the action of endopeptidases (Bassiri and Utiger, 1973;Metcalf, 1982). Its metabolic product, the cyclic dipeptide cyclo(his-pro) (CHP) or histidyl-proline diketopiperazine, has considerable physiologic activity, as do other naturally occurring diketopiperazines (Prasad, 1995).…”
