Metabolic syndrome in fifth grade children with acanthosis nigricans: results from the CARDIAC project

Abstract: Results are discussed in terms of systematically defining metabolic syndrome for high-risk children, as well as public health and clinical interventions targeting children who are overweight or obese. “…Different points of measurement were detected and cut-offs points have varied: $85th percentile of the population studied (47) and $90th percentile for age and sex (42,43) . In the present study, two measurement sites were accurate in predicting (6) reported that WC3 correlated significantly with all components of MetS in children aged 6-13 years.…”

“…Over one-third of the current population was overweight and obese. As noted in another study by Ice et al [34], obesity-associated AN is a reliable and early marker for the metabolic syndrome in pediatric patients. High prevalence of overweight was found among the current study subjects.…”

“…Of the nine types of AN, obesity-associated AN is the most common type. Research indicates that the "associated skin legions are weight dependent and regresses with weight reduction" [34]. Exercise and improved diet can help to lower insulin levels and can improve AN which is expected to reduce the risk for T2D and CVD.…”
