Metabolic Syndrome Associated with Schizophrenia and Atypical Antipsychotics

Abstract: Patients with schizophrenia are at increased risk for developing the metabolic syndrome or its individual components due to their lifestyle, suspected genetic predisposition, and exposure to antipsychotic medications that can cause weight gain and other metabolic side effects. Despite the availability of clinical guidelines, screening for and monitoring of metabolic problems in this patient population continue to be suboptimal. We provide an overview specifically addressing 1) why patients with schizophrenia a… Show more

“…[4][5][6] The identifying characteristics of metabolic syndrome are weight gain, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. 7 Despite the similarity of SGA-induced metabolic syndrome to other forms of prediabetes, the paucity of knowledge about the underlying physiology of the condition has hindered the development of optimal treatment strategies for controlling metabolic dysregulation. Nevertheless, health care providers have recognized the serious nature of SGAinduced metabolic side effects and have sought to ameliorate them through various interventions.…”

“…Most recently, Hasnain and colleagues recommended monitoring for diabetes with FPG testing in patients at high risk of developing diabetes 1 and 2 months after starting treatment with antipsychotics [Hasnain et al 2010]. The American Figure 1.…”

“…Moreover, these adverse effects are all risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and along with lifestyle changes and genetic components contribute to the decreased lifespan of patients with schizophrenia. 4 Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate long-term efficacy as well as the tolerability profile inclusive of metabolic adverse events of iloperidone.…”
