Metabolic Syndrome and Chronic Laryngitis

Abstract: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with a higher risk of morbidity and/or mortality for various chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of chronic laryngitis (CL) with MetS and its components in a representative Korean population.Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2008–2010) were analyzed. A total of 10,360 adults who had undergone otolaryngological examination were evaluated. The prevalence of CL in the study population was 3.1%. The … Show more

“…The increase in social activity related to the increase of the education level is likely to have decreased the incidence of these diseases or the self-questionnaire response rate [ 5 , 6 ]. The atherosclerosis process accelerated by MetS causes deterioration of tinnitus, while CL, which is caused by laryngopharyngeal reflux in patients with central obesity, which represents MetS, is a common cause of voice change [ 14 , 21 ]. Depressed mood is one of the psychosocial causes of laryngitis and tinnitus, but the predominantly male tendency in men has not previously been reported [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…[ 18 , 19 ] However, research on the relationship between voice dysfunction and MetS is scarce. We have reported a significant association between MetS and chronic laryngitis in Korean women, [ 20 ] and gastroesophageal reflux disease is known to be common in patients with obesity and chronic laryngitis. Patients with MetS would be expected to develop chronic laryngitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease in association with dysphonia.…”
