Metabolic risks in living kidney donors in South Korea

Abstract: Background: Considering the growing prevalence of Western lifestyles and related chronic diseases occurring in South Korea, this study aimed to explore the progression of metabolic risk factors in living kidney donors. Methods: This study enrolled living kidney donors from seven hospitals from 1982 to 2016. The controls were individuals that voluntarily received health check-ups from 1995 to 2016 that were matched with donors according to age, sex, diabetes status, baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate… Show more

“…The development of metabolic syndrome has been studied in kidney donors. An analysis of 2018 Living kidney donors, when matched with control non-donors, found that the living kidney donors showed a lower absolute prevalence for all metabolic risk factors, except for those who were either overweight or obese[ 176 ]. However, in another study, more donors developed new onset metabolic syndrome compared to the control group[ 177 ].…”

“…The primary and independent risk factors for hypertension and atherosclerotic CVD in donors were older age, obesity, smoking, and hyperlipidemia [22]. Kang et al studied the postoperative prevalence of metabolic risk factors, including hypertension, hyperuricemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity, in 2,018 LKT donors and matched non-donors [25]. The LKT donors showed a lower prevalence of metabolic risk factors except for obesity.…”

“…However, a recent study reported that kidney donation increased the risk of ESKD by 4-fold compared to that in a matched healthy population (7). Living kidney donation from marginal donors with risk factors for CKD, such as hypertension, glucose intolerance, and obesity, is inevitably increasing (8,9). Therefore, the prediction of post-donation kidney function is important for selecting eligible kidney donors and long-term management after kidney donation.…”
