Metabolic Regulation of Glial Phenotypes: Implications in Neuron–Glia Interactions and Neurological Disorders

Abstract: Glial cells are multifunctional, non-neuronal components of the central nervous system with diverse phenotypes that have gained much attention for their close involvement in neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases. Glial phenotypes are primarily characterized by their structural and functional changes in response to various stimuli, which can be either neuroprotective or neurotoxic. The reliance of neurons on glial cells is essential to fulfill the energy demands of the brain for its proper functionin… Show more

“…The mitochondrial perturbations observed in activated microglia can propagate signals to other cell types, including astrocytes and neurons, further exaggerating the disease outcome (Joshi et al, 2019 ). Increased glycolysis and upregulated expression of glucose transporters as well as glycolytic enzymes in activated microglia are a well-established phenomenon (Afridi et al, 2020 ). Increased microglial glycolysis is often coupled with the increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, exacerbating neurotoxicity, and escalating ongoing neurodegeneration.…”

“…Nevertheless, there was an increased population of other cell types, especially in the 400 mg/kg RV group, a possibility that these were small size neurons and glial cells. Neurons of the hipoocampus may not proliferate, but astrocytes and microglia are known to increase during insults (Afridi et al, 2020). Thus, this population of cells may have been more of astrocytes and/or microglia.…”

“…Of these proteins, 32 were shared between SCZ and BIP, and most of them related to mitochondrial electron transport, response to reactive oxygen species and glycolysis [72]. Interestingly, immunological status, energy metabolism, and neurotransmission exert strong influence on each other and are highly dependent on neuron-glia interactions [73].…”
