Metabolic profiling of patients with different idiopathic inflammatory myopathy subtypes reveals potential biomarkers in plasma

Abstract: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) are heterogeneous autoimmune diseases that primarily affect the proximal muscles. IIM subtypes include dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis (PM), and anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS). Metabolic disturbances may cause irreversible structural damage to muscle fibers in patients with IIM. However, the metabolite profile of patients with different IIM subtypes remains elusive. To investigate metabolic alterations and identify patients with different IIM subtypes, we comprehensive… Show more

“…Currently, the IIM subtypes are dermatomyositis (DM), anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS), immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) and polymyositis (PM). DM and ASS are the two more common clinical subtypes ( 2 ). IIMs are considered to be associated with higher mortality, with an estimated ten-year survival rate of 50–90% ( 3 ).…”

“…Although IIM is a heterogeneous group of diseases, muscle inflammation is observed in almost all cases. Initially, muscle biopsy was employed to diagnose IIM and assess histological changes in the muscles after treatment (8). However, this method is limited to the sampled site and cannot comprehensively reflect the condition of all muscles.…”
