Metabolic Profile and Evaluation of Biological Activities of Extracts from the Stems of Cissus trifoliata

Abstract: Cissus trifoliata (L.) L belongs to the Vitaceae family and is an important medicinal plant used in Mexico for the management of infectious diseases and tumors. The present study aimed to evaluate the metabolic profile of the stems of C. trifoliata and to correlate the results with their antibacterial and cytotoxic activities. The hexane extract was analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the CHCl3-MeOH and aqueous extracts by ultraperformance liquid chromatography quadrupo… Show more

“…Further investigations on CHCl 3 /MeOH extract led to isolation of several compounds such as: ceramides, cerebrosides, β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol-D-glucopyranoside, α-amyrin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl tetracosanoate [9,10]. Another study reported the chemical and biological profile of the stems of this plant [11]. In spite of the above, and to the best of our knowledge, there are no previous investigations about the cytotoxic activities related to the leaves of this plant.…”

“…The fatty compounds´ abundance is directly related to their polarity and inversely related to their molecular weight ( Table 2 ). Overall, the compounds identified in the hexane extract are common constituents of the cuticles and membranes of most plants [ 20 ].…”

“…Hence, the compounds in the bioactive fraction might act in synergy and contribute to the antitumor properties associated with C. trifoliata in traditional medicine. According to other studies, the content of terpenes, flavonoids, and stilbenes plays a major role in the anticancer properties of plants from the genus Cissus [ 5 , 21 , 22 ]. For example, from the fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the aerial part of C. quadrangularis , a bioactive fraction against MCF7 breast cancer cells in vitro with a high content of the flavonoids quercetin and rutin was obtained [ 21 ].…”

“…The culture was incubated at 37 °C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 . The fractions F1–F5 were composed mainly of alkanes, fatty acids, esters, and sterols, hence their evaluation was neglected since we previously reported the cytotoxicity of the lipidic content of C. trifoliata stems against PC3 cells [ 5 ]. The fractions F6-13 of the CHCl 3 -MeOH extract and the positive control Taxol were dissolved in DMSO (≤0.6%) in supplemented culture medium.…”
