Metabolic network reconstruction of Chlamydomonas offers insight into light‐driven algal metabolism

Abstract: A comprehensive genome-scale metabolic network of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, including a detailed account of light-driven metabolism, is reconstructed and validated. The model provides a new resource for research of C. reinhardtii metabolism and in algal biotechnology.

“…Martineau et al [8] calculated that the amounts of dry matter per mole of artificial lighting gained by lettuce grown using red (650 nm) LEDs or highpressure sodium lamps were identical, and Chang et al [10] calculated that the maximum photon utilization efficiency for growth of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under red LEDs is centred at 674 nm. Lettuce grown under red LEDs presented hypocotyls and cotyledons that were elongated, a phenomenon known to be phytochrome-dependent.…”

“…Amino acid metabolism in iCZ843 contains 282 reactions and the total related reaction in other subsystems account for 312, compared with 34 reactions in C. protothecoides, 256 in C. reinhardtii, and 143 in Synechocystis spp. (Supplemental Table S4; Chang et al, 2011;Saha et al, 2011;Overbeek et al, 2014).…”

“…Using the genome annotation for C. vulgaris UTEX 395, as well as an existing and manually curated genome-scale model for C. reinhardtii (iRC1080; Chang et al, 2011), a preliminary draft reconstruction for C. vulgaris UTEX 395 based on protein homology was assembled.…”
