Metabolic Implications of Exposure to Light at Night: Lessons from Animal and Human Studies

Abstract: Lately, the incidence of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes has shown a staggering increase. To prevent and treat these conditions, one must look at their etiology. As life on earth has evolved under the conditions of nature’s 24‐hour light/dark cycle, it seems likely that exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) would affect physiology. Indeed, ample evidence has shown that LAN impacts many metabolic parameters, at least partly via the biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalam… Show more

“…For example, sleep disturbance in older adults is associated with poor health, such as depression and limitations in activities of daily living 26 . Exposure to artificial light at night has a negative impact on metabolic health 27 . Additionally, meal skipping lowers energy and nutrient intake 28 .…”

“…Excessive exposure to light at night is a globally widespread phenomenon of a modern society. During recent years, evidence has been accumulating that such disturbances of natural LD cycles can impose potential health risks, especially in association with metabolic dysfunction [29,38]. Therefore, there is an urgent need to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms linking dLAN with metabolic disorders.…”

“…The last years have seen an increased awareness of the impact of light on health, particularly of its detrimental effects when light is not delivered at the appropriate time. Light at night, also called “light pollution,” is becoming a major environmental and health concern ( 1 4 ). Even low-level light exposure from light-emitting devices, smartphones, or tablets may disrupt sleep ( 5 , 6 ).…”
