Metabolic dysfunction and obesity‐related cancer: Beyond obesity and metabolic syndrome

Abstract: Objectives: The metabolic dysfunction driven by obesity, including hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia, increases risk for developing at least 13 cancer types. The concept of “metabolic dysfunction” is often defined by meeting various combinations of criteria for metabolic syndrome. However, the lack of a unified definition of metabolic dysfunction makes it difficult to compare findings across studies. “…It is important to highlight the growing evidence that indicates that subjects with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for some common tumors, including cancers of the prostate, colon, breast, endometrium, pancreas, and liver [ 197 ]. Increased insulin levels may trigger the cancer associations of several additional risk factors [ 198 ], comprising high waist circumference, visceral fat, body mass index, sedentary lifestyle, and an inadequate food intake [ 199 ], among others.…”

The risk of cancer in adulthood is also significantly increased by childhood obesity (5,6). In recent years, the incidence of precocious puberty in children with obesity has gradually increased.…”
