Metabolic changes in aging humans: current evidence and therapeutic strategies

Abstract: Aging and metabolism are inextricably linked, and many age-related changes in body composition, including increased central adiposity and sarcopenia, have underpinnings in fundamental aging processes. These age-related changes are further exacerbated by a sedentary lifestyle and can be in part prevented by maintenance of activity with aging. Here we explore the age-related changes seen in individual metabolic tissues — adipose, muscle, and liver — as well as globally in older adults. We also discuss the availa… Show more

“…At 13 months of age, both groups presented an increase in triglycerides, glucose, and cholesterol, which could be due to the transition from young adulthood to middle age, generating an accumulation of excess visceral fat, muscle mass, and strength loss, and an increase in adipocyte size in subcutaneous fat leading to and Jensen, 2022. It is important to note that no significant differences were found when comparing the values of these parameters between the two groups at 6 and 13 months considering the Harlan manual (Giknis and Clifford, 2008).…”

“…Penuaan berhubungan dengan terjadinya SM (Palmer & Jensen, 2022). Gaya hidup sedentari mempercepat terjadinya SM karena terjadinya kelebihan kalori dan gangguan metabolisme lemak.…”

“…Gaya hidup sedentari mempercepat terjadinya SM karena terjadinya kelebihan kalori dan gangguan metabolisme lemak. Sehingga restriksi kalori dan peningkatan aktivitas fisik dapat menurunkan resiko SM (Lin & Li, 2021;Palmer & Jensen, 2022;World Health Organization (WHO), 2022). Suatu studi meta-analisis yang dilakukan Myers et al (2019) menemukan bahwa pada penderita sindroma metabolic, gangguan metabolisme dapat dihambat atau bahkan dikurangi dengan olahraga aerobic atau resistensi dan kombinasi keduanya.…”

“…Through constitutive changes in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), age-related metabolic diseases lead to mitochondrial dysfunction. [144,145] Mitochondria-related glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, β-oxidation, and OXPHOS were decreased in the elderly population. [146] Besides, aging is associated with obesity-independent insulin resistance and involves disrupted mitochondrial structure and dysregulated cellular insulin action.…”
