Metabolic Activity Assessment by 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography in Patients after COVID-19 Vaccination

Abstract: In the following report, we describe 11 patients with various diagnoses and different treatment statuses (newly diagnosed, receiving treatment, or follow-up) of oncological diseases (breast, lymphoma, melanoma, and head and neck cancers). The patients underwent PET-CT for disease staging or follow-up and it was noted that all patients had areas of hypermetabolic uptake in the axillary lymph-nodes of the ipsilateral upper extremity where the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine was administered. Follo… Show more

“…Radiologists and pathologists play a pivotal role in resolving this diagnostic ambiguity. Determining the distribution pattern of metastatic lesions, recognizing morphological similarities between sites of metastases, and, in more complex cases, conducting arterial and venous phase studies contribute to establishing the diagnosis of metastasis at unconventional locations [52]. In instances where the metastasis is solitary or where the nature of the lesion is challenging to ascertain, an additional tissue biopsy from the uncommon site may be necessary to confirm the presence of metastatic disease.…”

“…A recent study by Cohen et al [ 18 ] showed that the incidence of lymphadenopathy after BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine identified by 18 F-FDG PET-CT, was up to 53.9% after the booster shot. Besides axillary adenopathies, which are easily visualized by US, it was discussed in various articles that the strong immune response to vaccines is observed on 18 F-FDG PET-CT as an increased uptake in different and multiple lymph node territories, such as the mediastinum, the neck, the supraclavicular fossae and even the abdomen, following a vaccination in the deltoid muscle [ 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Nevertheless, myocarditis associated with DRESS is associated with a similarly high mortality rate, approximately 40% [72]. When comparing the rarity of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Induced Myocarditis to COVID-19-associated myocarditis, this discrepancy may stem from challenges related to misclassification and the intricate diagnosis of cardiac events triggered by ICIs, or other rare and unexpected adverse events related to the COVID-19 vaccine, particularly amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic [73][74][75][76][77][78]. A systematic review encompassing 43 articles, ultimately identified 51 patients with COVID-19-associated myocarditis based on clinical diagnosis.…”
