Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has gained enormous popularity since it is a base of an Internet of Things and applied in many areas of application. However, this network suffers an energy constraint issue which has to be tackled. Medium Access Control (MAC) manages the radio communication of transmitter and receiver, which is the highest energy consumed of sensor nodes. Therefore, many researchers have been proposed new MAC protocols to overcome this limitation. This paper explores and compares several MAC protocols for clustering WSN. Clustering network has a different characteristic since it classifies nodes as Cluster Heads and Cluster Members. This leads to a unique approach in developing MAC to enhance the network's performance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as smart grids, smart agriculture, smart cities, and e-healthcare are popular nowadays. Generally, IoT end devices are extremely sensitive to the utilization of energy. The medium access control (MAC) layer is responsible for coordination and access of the IoT devices. It is essential to design an efficient MAC protocol for achieving high throughput in IoT. Duty cycling is a fundamental process in wireless networks and also an energy-saving necessity if nodes are required to operate for more than a few days. Numerous MAC protocols along with different objectives have been proposed for the IoT. However, to the best of our knowledge, only limited work has been performed dedicated to covering MAC and radio duty cycling (RDC). Therefore, in this study, we propose a systematic cataloging system and use if to organize the most important MAC and RDC proposals. In this catalog, each protocol has been categorized into main ideas, advantages, applications, limitations, innovative features, and potential future improvements. Our critical analysis is different from previous research studies, as we have fully covered all recent studies in this domain. We discuss challenges and future research directions.

Wireless body area networks (WBANs) assemble multiple transceiver nodes in, on, or around a patient's body to transmit physiological signals to the sink node and further send it to the medical personnel via a medical server. WBANs a sensor network that is characterized as energy-dependent. Due to this finite nature, the deployment of intelligent utilization is needed. Quality of service (QoS) is another area that needs rapt attention to receive exactly what was sent from the source node to the destination node and throughput. Critical data transmission is characterized by abnormal data status that requires an urgent response from the medical personnel without delay to save the patient's life. In this review article, we propose a review of critical data transmission in wireless body area networks. However, most past articles in this line focus more on energy-efficient, security and privacy, quality of the links, throughput, network maximization, and so on. None of them looks into the direction of transmitting critical data directly to the sink node without multi-hopping of the physiological signals between intermediate nodes, which wastes the time of transmission to save patient life. This disparity between these scholars motivates us to fill the gap between them. This review article briefly discussed the state-of-the-art critical data transmission in WBANs alongside the WBANs architecture and implementation. Furthermore, a pragmatic approach to determining the threshold's degree of critical data index sensed during transmission was also considered.
