Meta-analysis of variables affecting mouse protection efficacy of whole organism Brucella vaccines and vaccine candidates

Abstract: BackgroundVaccine protection investigation includes three processes: vaccination, pathogen challenge, and vaccine protection efficacy assessment. Many variables can affect the results of vaccine protection. Brucella, a genus of facultative intracellular bacteria, is the etiologic agent of brucellosis in humans and multiple animal species. Extensive research has been conducted in developing effective live attenuated Brucella vaccines. We hypothesized that some variables play a more important role than others in… Show more

“…This study indicates that B. ovis ⌬abcBA has potential as a vaccine strain. Although the mouse model has been extensively used to validate live Brucella vaccine-induced protection (37), results cannot be directly extrapolated to other host species, since even different mouse strains influence the protection results (38). Indeed, we have recently demonstrated that the B. ovis ⌬abcBA strain induces humoral and cellular immune responses in rams that are indistinguishable from those triggered by the parental wild-type strain (24).…”

“…A clear representation of temporal periods between processes is also required. In a recent study [85], nearly 20 variables were identified to logically represent the vaccine protection study. The 20 variables provide a prototype of minimal information for analysis of vaccine protection.…”

“…One example of ontology-based statistical meta-analysis is an ontology modeling and meta-analysis of different variables contributing to the vaccine efficacy of whole organism Brucella vaccines using the mouse model [85,87]. In this study, based on the identification of 19 variables ( e.g.…”
