Meta‐analysis of randomized, controlled treatment trials for pediatric obsessive‐compulsive disorder

Abstract: This is the first meta-analysis of treatment RCTs for pediatric OCD. CBT and pharmacotherapy were the only treatments effective beyond control in alleviating OCD symptoms. CBT showed a greater ES than pharmacotherapy. Previous meta-analyses that included uncontrolled trials exaggerated the efficacy of both treatments.

“…It often causes significant morbidity and persists across the lifespan (Micali et al, 2010). Established treatments for childhood OCD include the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) and cognitivebehavioral therapy (CBT), particularly exposure and response prevention (Geller et al, 2003;Watson and Rees, 2008). Moreover, the combination of medication and CBT may be more effective than either treatment alone (Pediatric OCD Treatment Study, 2004).…”

“…In these two meta-analyses only psychological treatments were included. The overlap was even lower when compared our meta-analysis with other meta-analyses that also included pharmacological treatments, such as Watson and Rees (2008) with 6.5%, or Abramowitz et al (2005) with 19.6%. The minor overlap between our meta-analysis and the previous ones guarantees the originality of our results.…”

“…There have been published four meta-analyses on the efficacy of psychological interventions in pediatric OCD (Abramowitz, Whiteside, & Deacon, 2005;Freeman et al, 2007;O'Kearney, 2007;Watson & Rees, 2008). Abramowitz et al (2005Abramowitz et al ( ) identified 18 articles, published between 1983Abramowitz et al ( and 2004, that included 10 ERP groups, 10 pharmacotherapy groups, and seven placebo control groups.…”

“…A substantial number of studies have evaluated the use of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) involving exposure and response prevention [6,31,32]. Interventions for OCD, as indeed as for other child psychiatric disorders, have also taken into increasing consideration the involvement of parents and families [28].…”
