Meta‐analysis of physiological effects of skin‐to‐skin contact for newborns and mothers

Abstract: Skin-to-skin care is effective in increasing the body temperature of babies, especially where resources are limited and the environment is cold. Decreased oxygen saturation of the babies, however, warrants further prospective studies to confirm the findings.

“…[23][24][25][26] However, studies that compare outcomes before, during and after STS have encountered a negative effect on oxygen saturation during STS that is not transient in cold environments. 27 A 43% (not statistically significant) lower infant mortality has been observed with traditional KMC in Columbia. 28 Lower 24 h mortality 29 and mortality before discharge 30 were associated with early KMC in two small African studies; however, important differences in study group characteristics were not controlled in analysis.…”

“…El contacto de la madre con la piel del neonato en forma temprana se ha relacionado con una serie de beneficios como una mayor duración de lactancia materna, disminución en el llanto del niño, mejor estabilidad cardiorrespiratoria 5 e incremento en la temperatura corporal. 6 Allí se pueden realizar las evaluaciones necesarias, identificación y posteriormente quedar en alojamiento conjunto con la madre.…”

“…The absence of vigorous crying is not indicative of the absence of newborn breathing. Quiet stable newborn breathing happens often without a single peep out of the baby who is immediately placed in the habitat (Moore, Anderson, & Bergman, 2007;Mori, Khanna, Pledge, & Nakayama, 2010). This is frequently observed of babies who are born in water.…”
