Meta-analysis of an association of codon 72 polymorphisms of the p53 gene with increased endometrial cancer risk

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Polymorphisms of the p53 gene have been associated with susceptibility to endometrial cancer. However, whether there is a specific association is still controversial. We investigated a possible association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and endometrial cancer risk by conducting a meta-analysis. Publications addressing this association were selected from the Pubmed, Embase and CBM databases (up to January 2011). Data were extracted from the studies by two independent reviewers. The meta-analysis wa… Show more

“…13 However, meta-analysis among Asian populations reported an association between endometrial cancer risk and p53 codon 72 polymorphism. 34 The possible explanation for this finding is that the previous study had a relatively small sample size and may lead to a rough risk estimate. One important issue for any meta-analysis is the degree of heterogeneity because nonhomogeneous studies may generate misleading results.…”

“…According to these Czech researchers, TP53 may serve as one of the genetic markers responsible for differentiation of patients with bad EC prognosis [ 13 ]. Having found two meta-analyzes on TP53 polymorphism-EC linkage, the authors of the first one did not observe any correlation between EC risk and TP53 codon 72 polymorphism (although further studies in larger number of patients are recommended) [ 14 ], while the second report varies, combining Pro allele and Pro carriers (Pro/Pro, Arg/Pro) with increased EC risk (OR = 1.25 and 1.34, respectively) [ 15 ].…”

“…In the last decade the possible association of endometrium cancer with p53 polymorphism codon 72 has been investigated in several human populations. A positive association with the Pro variant has been observed in Korean and other Asiatic populations but not in Caucasian populations [2][3][4][5][6]. In Japanese women a positive association has been found with Arg variant [7].…”
