Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review of Micro- and Macro-Nutrient Intakes and Trajectories of Macro-Nutrient Supply in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Abstract: The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is experiencing a nutrition transition, characterized by the emergence of overnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies. No previous study has comparatively examined nutrient intake in adults across countries in the EMR. This review examined the adequacy of nutrients in adults living in the EMR. Moreover, it analyzed the food balance sheets (FBS) for 1961–2018 to identify the trajectory of energy supply from macro-nutrients in the EMR. A systematic search was conducted fr… Show more

“…Among U.S. adults (>19 years of age), dietary fibre intake in 2009 was 13.7 g/day in females and 17.6 g/day in males, with only 6% and <3% meeting the AI recommendation, respectively [ 108 ]. In the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, the average daily intake of fibre was 21.8 g/day (95% confidence interval: 19.6–24.1), according to the finding of a recent meta-analysis based on 43 studies ( n = 72,534 subjects) published in recent nine years [ 109 ]. Accordingly, low dietary fibre intake in the general population appears to be a global issue.…”

“…Micro and macroelements are essential to impart a healthy lifestyle which aids in the metabolic processes, energy production, and combatting COVID-19 [ 50 , 51 , 52 ]. Microgreens are seen as a major source of various important micro and macronutrients with a significant difference in the overall composition of the nutrient content among various microgreen types.…”

“…The enrichment of ORS with both zinc and probiotics was also shown to be beneficial in well-nourished, nonhospitalised infants [ 75 ]. Based on this and considering the suboptimal zinc intake in the Eastern Mediterranean region [ 76 , 77 ] and the potentially high rate of zinc deficiency among Jordanian children [ 78 ], zinc supplementation is recommended as add-on to ORS when possible.…”
