Messy Play Therapy in the Treatment of Food Aversion in a Patient With Intestinal Failure: Our Experience

Abstract: Background Food aversion (FA) is an eating behavior where children refuse solid or fluid intake. FA can compromise the weaning off parenteral nutrition (PN) in children with intestinal failure (IF), reducing their quality of life (QoL). Around 25% of children with IF experience FA, but few data are available on interventions to get over FA. Messy play therapy (MPT) uses sensory activities to provide another meaningful avenue for learning in children by creating a fun way to experience new textures. This study … Show more

“…Chiatto et al [ 17 ] retrospectively analysed data on children with SBS suffering from FA and treated with a technique called Messy Play Therapy (MPT). The aim of MPT is to allow children to become familiar with food textures and smells without pressure to taste or eat it.…”

“…Having a child who can sense subtle differences in food, despite it appearing and looking the same to the majority, is one aspect of sensory sensitivity that often‐left parents somewhat frustrated. Findings from recent research on sensory play interventions (Coulthard et al, 2018 ), messy play therapy (Chiatto et al, 2019 ), and food neophobia interventions (Blomkvist et al, 2021 ), could provide potential solutions to these issues and help improve mealtime interactions and provide much‐needed parent support.…”

“…It may require very challenging tube weaning methods. A recent paper reported messy play therapy (MPT) using sensory activities to provide another meaningful avenue for learning in children by creating a fun way to experience new textures [127]. Better quality of life (QoL) and mealtimes with family were reported at median follow-up of 39 (24–56) months.…”
