A revised stratigraphic framework for the Messinian succession of Cyprus is proposed demonstrating that the three-stage model for the Messinian salinity crisis recently established for the Western Mediterranean also applies to the Eastern Mediterranean, at least for its marginal basins. This analysis is based on a multidisciplinary study of the Messinian evaporites and associated deposits exposed in the Polemi, Pissouri, Maroni/Psematismenos and Mesaoria basins. Here, we document for the first time that the base of the unit usually referred to the 'Lower Evaporites' in Cyprus does not actually correspond to the onset of the Messinian salinity crisis. The basal surface of this unit rather corresponds to a regional-scale unconformity, locally associated with an angular discordance, and is related to the erosion and resedimentation of primary evaporites deposited during the first stage of the Messinian salinity crisis. This evidence suggests that the 'Lower Evaporites' of the southern basins of Cyprus actually belong to the second stage of the Messinian salinity crisis; they can be thus ascribed to the Resedimented Lower Gypsum unit that was deposited between 5.6 and 5.5 Ma and is possibly coeval to the halite deposited in the northern Mesaoria basin. Primary, in situ evaporites of the first stage of the Messinian salinity crisis were not preserved in Cyprus basins. Conversely, shallow-water primary evaporites deposited during the third stage of the Messinian salinity crisis are well preserved; these deposits can be regarded as the equivalent of the Upper Gypsum of Sicily. Our study documents that the Messinian stratigraphy shows many similarities between the Western and Eastern Mediterranean marginal basins, implying a common and likely coeval development of the Messinian salinity crisis. This could be reflected also in intermediate and deep-water basins; we infer that the Lower Evaporites seismic unit in the deep Eastern Mediterranean basins could well be mainly composed of clastic evaporites and that its base could correspond to the Messinian erosional surface

Los estudios en el patrimonio paleontológico de Mallorca (archipiélago Balear, Mediterráneo occidental) posibilitan dividir el Mioceno postectónico de la isla en secuencias deposicionales separadas por discontinuidades sedimentarias. Estas se han ordenado de acuerdo con las oscilaciones glacio-eustáticas mediterráneas. El finitortoniense documentado comprende margas lagunares y superficie erosiva (T/M). La transgresión marina posterior se inicia con un nuevo ciclo litoral/mareal (entrada de Globorotalia mediterranea. Messiniense I-MI-Fm. Calizas de Santanyí) y con hasta 4 registros sedimentarios distintos según influencia del relieve emergido. La crisis finimessiniense se manifiesta con nuevos registros restringidos y nuevo ciclo litoral con fauna marina brackish-Lagomare (Sintema MII-Fm. Calizas Pont d’Inca; Sintema MIII-Fm. Margas y conglomerados de Rafal-Son Seguí). La ordenación estratigráfica propuesta se refuerza con una primera interpretación paleoambiental. Para el finimioceno de Mallorca este estudio ha supuesto la diferenciación de un ciclo litoral mareal messiniense entre dos episodios restringidos. El registro messiniense estudiado documenta la distensión del relieve emergido y aporta nuevas perspectivas para interpretar la crisis de salinidad mediterránea (registro de cuenca marginal) y el poblamiento finimioceno del archipiélago.

The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC), which widely affected the whole Mediterranean basin, induced rapid and spectacular palaeoenvironmental changes. It led to a major erosion of the onshore areas and the upper parts of the continental shelves and slopes, as well as important evaporitic deposits in the offshore deep basins. The Corsica Basin belongs to the so-called "intermediate-depth basin" type because of its location between the coastal plainshelf area of East Corsica and deeper marine basins in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. The MSC event took place in the Corsica Basin during a period of active regional tectonics, contemporaneous with the opening of the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as during the development of the Corsica Basin and the Elba-Pianosa Ridge.Based on the interpretation of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles and a new 1:250,000 scale synthetic geological map, we establish that the MSC is recorded in the Corsica Basin through the occurrence of two sedimentary formations bounded by three remarkable surfaces. These seismic markers suggest local and temporal variations in relative water level and associated depositional environments that differ between the north and south of the Corsica Basin.
