Messaging with Cost-Optimized Interstellar Beacons

Abstract: On Earth, how would we build galactic-scale beacons to attract the attention of extraterrestrials, as some have suggested we should do? From the point of view of expense to a builder on Earth, experience shows an optimum trade-off. This emerges by minimizing the cost of producing a desired power density at long range, which determines the maximum range of detectability of a transmitted signal. We derive general relations for cost-optimal aperture and power. For linear dependence of capital cost on transmitter … Show more

“…In contrast, we note that targeted signals broadcast by Arecibo could be detected at a distance of 1 kpc by a receiver of similar capabilities (Tarter, 2001). More powerful beacons lie within the capabilities of present-day human civilization and would cost a few billion USD (Benford et al, 2010). Similarly, it has been argued that the detection threshold for continuous wave lasers is between a few kW and MW (assuming a 10 m sized telescope), which falls within the bounds of current or upcoming human technology (Tellis and Marcy, 2017).…”

“…A novel entitled The Unreasoning Mask, by the American author Philip José Farmer (1918Farmer ( -2009, is another that treats the notion of world-killers (Farmer 1981). But perhaps the idea of malignant killing machines has been treated most thoroughly by the American astrophysicist Gregory Benford (1941-), who is also one of the finest modern SF writers; see, for example, Benford (1977).…”
