Messages from the Aalst Allergy Study

Abstract: Our study corroborates the reported prevalences of sensitization and allergic diseases. Moreover the study illustrates the complexity of the search for factors involved in the process of sensitization and allergic disease. The impact of different potential causative factors is not only influenced by mutual interactions of these factors, but also by the existence of distinct subtypes of disease.

“…In the study conducted by by Alsowaidi et al (13) in United Arab Emirates, it was reported that the prevalence of allergic rhinitis was higher in the female population. In a study conducted by Van Gysel et al (14) in Belgium, while allergic rhinitis was significantly higher in males in children younger than 8 years of age, a significant increase was observed in the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in females. The time interval from 8 to 10 years was accepted to be significant for children in the study, and the prevalence rate of allergic rhinitis evidently increased for females during this period.…”

In our study, the correlation between pet feeding in the house and allergic rhinitis was significant (p=0.04).…”

“…[5] Its prevalence in preschool children is higher than 12%. [6][7][8] Each year childhood asthma generates a great number of hospitalizations and missed school days. [9,10] The increasing prevalence of asthma as well as that of caries in preschool children has prompted investigators to speculate that asthma in childhood might be a causal factor in the development of caries.…”
