“…Although several reports 16,17) on the case of malignant pleural mesothelioma demonstrate low density exposure over a prolonged period of time (more than 40 yr), our study shows a different view on the tumor since we reveal a higher density exposure but a shorter period of exposure time. Also due to the evidence of the great concentration of asbestos bodies and fibers in the lungs, our study shows that, though exposure to asbestos was for a shorter period, it resulted in a much greater intensity and high density in relationship to time exposed.…”

“…"The presence of eight cases of peritoneal mesothelioma in the study population (SIR=25.04 (CI 10.78-49.33) confirmed the significantly elevated incidence of these cancers for both genders" [41]. The results agree with an American study [42,43] which compiled all cases peritoneal mesothelioma from 1973 to 1984 and in which the percentage of cases in women was higher than in men. This finding is contrary to other studies that claim a lesser causal relationship between asbestos exposure and peritoneal mesothelioma in women as compared to men [20].…”

“…This finding is contrary to other studies that claim a lesser causal relationship between asbestos exposure and peritoneal mesothelioma in women as compared to men [20]. There have been other reports of peritoneal mesotheliomas in occupational groups exposed to chrysotile asbestos from all over the world including China [44,45] Italy [46,47] Australia [48] and Canada [42,49].…”

“…Few workers have been exposed only to chrysotile, most historical exposure measurements were of particles rather than fibres, and the interpretation of lung burden studies is complicated by the rapid pulmonary clearance of chrysotile. The controversy has focused on the Quebec chrysotile miners and millers (Liddell et al, 1997;McDonald et al, 1997). The ratio of mesothelioma to excess lung cancer was about 1:4, but the authors attributed most of the 38 mesotheliomas to contamination with tremolite, and concluded that exposure below 300 million particles per cubic footÐyears, which was stated to be equivalent to 10 years at 80 fibre ml Ð1 , was virtually innocuous.…”
