“…High‐resolution satellite observations reveal pronounced couplings between the ocean and atmosphere at mesoscales, particularly in the extratropical regions with energetic mesoscale eddies and strong sea surface temperature (SST) fronts, such as Kuroshio Extensions (KE) and Agulhas Return Current (ARC) (Chelton et al., 2004; Maloney & Chelton, 2006; Nonaka & Xie, 2003; Small et al., 2008; Wei et al., 2017; Xie, 2004), the tropical Pacific associated with tropical instability waves (Chelton et al., 2001; Hashizume et al., 2001; Small et al., 2003; Tian et al., 2019; Zhang, 2014; Zhang & Busalacchi, 2008), and the western coast of South America (Cui et al., 2020, 2021).
